Zafar Iqbal was a fantastic player of Hockey and remains the favorite of many of the youngsters, but he could have been a football player: Professor Zillur Rehman Khan encouraged him to take Hockey because he was good at left flick. While studying at Aligarh Muslim University he selected Hockey as his game.
He represented India in Olympics and was the member of the 1980 Olympics Winner.
He was felicitated with Arjun Award in 1983.
He says that the standard of game has declined but it is not due to Cricket but because players are not playing it with their heart and federations are not providing good monetary policies to the players to encourage them.
He says that sports should be a compulsory subject in schools and colleges and there should be a proper weightage for this if we want to increase the level of our games.
