பண்டித ஜவஹர்லால் நேரு 1889 ஆம் வருடம் 14 நவம்பர் அன்று அலகாபாத்தில் பிறந்தார். இவரது தகப்பனார் மோதிலால் நேரு மிகப்பெரும் செல்வந்தர். எனவே நேரு வளரும்போது அவருக்கு எல்லா வாழ்க்கை வசதிகளும் சராசரிக் குழந்தைகளைவிடவும் மிகவும் அதிகமாகவே கிடைத்தன. ஹாரோ மற்றும் கேம்பிரிட்ஜ் பல்கலை கழகங்களில் படித்து பட்டம் பெற்ற நேரு இந்திய திரும்பியதும் அலகாபாத் உயர்நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கறிஞராகப் பணி புரிந்தார்.
ஆங்கிலேய ஆதிக்கத்தில் இந்தியாவும் இந்தியர்களும் எப்படி நடத்தப படுகின்றனர் என்பதை பார்த்து வருந்தி நேரு சுதந்திர போராட்டத்தில் குதித்தார். அண்ணல் காந்தியடிகளால் கவரப்பட்டு அவரது தலைமையை ஏற்று ஒத்துழையாமை இயக்கத்தில் பங்கேற்றார்.
தேசத்திற்காக தனது நலன்கள் யாவையும் துறந்த நேரு சுதந்திர இந்தியாவில் சுமார் 17 ஆண்டு காலம் இந்தியாவின் பிரதமராகப் பணி செய்து இந்தியாவை வளர்ச்சிப் பாதையில் அழைத்து சென்றதனால் இவரை மனிதருள் மாணிக்கம் என்று அழைக்கின்றனர்.
நேரு ஒரு முற்போக்கு சிந்தனை உடையவர். இவர் இந்திய ஒரு வளர்ந்த நாடாகவும் நவீன நாடாகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று கனவு கண்டார். அவர் பிரதமராகப் பணி செய்த காலத்தில் இந்த தேசம் பலவிதமான சோதனைகளை சந்தித்தது. இந்து மதத்தை சேர்ந்த பெண்களுக்கு தமது தகப்பனாரது சொத்துக்களில் பங்கு உண்டு என்பதை சட்டபூர்வமாக்க நேரு அரும்பாடு பட்டார்.
அண்ணல் காந்தியடிகளுக்கு நேருவுக்கும் அடிப்படையில் பல வேறுபாடுகள் இருந்தன. ஆயினும் அவர்களிருவரும் இந்திய தேசத்தின் சுதந்திரத்திற்கும் வளர்ச்சிக்கும் இணைந்து பணியாற்றிய விதம் அனைவரையும் கவர்ந்தது. தனது தொண்டுகளாலும் தியாகத்தினாலும் இந்திய மக்களின் நெஞ்சங்களில் நிறைந்த தலைவராக நேரு திகழ்கிறார்.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad. His father Motilal Nehru was so rich that Nehru got all comforts in abundance during his young age much more than the children of average families. He studied in Harrow and Cambridge Universities and became a lawyer to practice law in Allahabad High Court.
Saddened by the treatment given to India and Indians under the British regime, Nehru decided to jump into freedom struggle. He was drawn into the non-cooperation movement being influenced by Gandhiji.
Sacrificing a great deal for the Motherland, Nehru served as the Prime Minister of India after its independence for about 17 years. Since he led the country towards a phenomenal development, he was called ‘A Gem among Humans’.
Nehru had a great deal of forward thinking. He dreamt of India being a developed and modern country. During his role as the Prime Minister of the country, Nehru had to face a lot of hardships. Nehru worked hard to see that the women of Hindu families get the rights to inherit their family’s property.
Nehru and Gandhiji had a lot of dissimilarities between them on several issues. Nevertheless, masses were impressed by the fact that these two leaders worked together in a wonderful coordination for the welfare of India. For his sacrifice and services, Nehru is always remembered by the Indians.
