“Makar Sankranti” is the day on which the sun enters into the sun-sign of Capricorn (Makara – मकर राशी).
It is a specific solar day, usually January 14 every year, in the Hindu calendar and Hindu festival that marks the start of longer days with the Winter solstice as well as the start of the Uttarayana (उत्तरायण).
