கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன் சிவகங்கை மாவட்டத்தில் காரைக்குடிக்கு அருகில் சிறுகூடல்பட்டி என்ற ஊரில் பிறந்தார். சிறு வயதிலேயே குழந்தையில்லாத பழனியப்ப செட்டியார் சிகப்பி ஆச்சி என்னும் தம்பதியினருக்கு சுவீகாரமாகக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட இவர் தனது சிறு வயதிலேயே வீட்டை விட்டு சென்னைக்கு வேலை தேடி வந்து விட்டார்.

கண்ணதாசன் பாடல்களால் நல்வழிப் படுத்தப்பட்டோர் ஏராளம். கவிஞர் வாலி, கண்ணதாசன் ‘மயக்கமா, கலக்கமா’ என்ற கண்ணதாசனது பாடல் வரிகளாலேயே வாழ்வில் இழந்திருந்த பிடிப்பினை மீண்டும் பெற்று நம்பிக்கையுடன் முன்னேறியதாகக் கூறுவார்.
பல துறைகளிலும் சிறந்து விளங்கிய கண்ணதாசன் ஆரம்பத்தில் ஒரு நாத்திகராக இருந்தாலும் பிற்காலத்தில் இந்து சமயத்தில் ஒரு ஆழமான பற்றுடையவராக மாறி ‘அர்த்தமுள்ள இந்துமதம்’ என்னும் ஒரு அரிய நூலை இயற்றியுள்ளார். கண்ணதாசன் மறைந்தாலும் அவரது பாடல்களும் எழுத்தும் என்றும் மக்கள் மனதில் நின்று அவர்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டும் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை.

Poet Kannadasan was born in the village of Sirukoodalpatti near Karaikudi in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. As a young boy, he was given in adoption to a couple named Palaniyappa Chettiyar and Sigappi Achi. Even before turning into an adult, Kannadasan left the house and went to Chennai in search of jobs and livelihood.
Kannadasan had studied only till eighth class. However, due to his avid reading habits, he has developed a sound literary knowledge. Seeing the poetic and prose writing talents in Kannadasan, the cinema and journal world pushed him to never ending fame.
A lot of people have been inspired by the poems, songs and writings of Kannadasan. Poet Vali used to say that at a time when he had lost his hopes in life, Kannadasan’s writings had helped infuse courage and confidence in him once again.
With his talents in different fields, Kannadasan was an atheist in the beginning. However, towards the later part of his life, he had attached himself deeply to Hinduism and had written a book titled “Meaningful Hinduism”.
