  1. THE GREATNESS OF AVVAI AMAL J ERONIMUS CONTACT: 9442701428 amaltamilnadu@gmail.com
Avvai is the saint poetess of the Tamil country who lived
thousands of years ago, propagating the fragrance of Tamil
literature and also speaking about morality and spirituality. She
acted as a messenger between the warring Tamil kings and
brought peace among them. The name Avvaiyar was conferred
on saintly women, who lived in the Tamil country at different
times, and there were at least six Avvaiyars right from the first
century to the 18 th century composed thirty three poems which
    were the literary eminence.
The first Avvaiyar belonged to the first century, the second to the
10 th century, the third to the 16 th century, the fourth to the 17 th
century and the fifth and sixth to the 18 th century. The word
Avvai denotes any elderly woman and the author proves this with
quotations. The word has been used in other languages like
Kannada, Telugu and Sanskrit. Different stories are wide spread
that she had encounters with gods and her pictures and statues are
    found through out Tamil Nadu.
Her poems were written for the purpose of children for learning
the Tamil Alphabet. Yet it is not as a linguist that her claim to
wisdom rests though that is considerable. As is common with a
figure of surpassing greatness, she was all things to all people
and all communities contended to claim her as one of their own.
As a girl she was a precious composer of verses. At the age of

our she had managed to complete a knotty verse that had defied
the creative efforts of the best in the land.
One of her reputed quotes is that ‘Rare is human birth, rarer
without deformity. Rarer still is a human birth when one is
interested in wisdom. Rarest of all human births is one
possessing charity and penance.’ Avvaiyar’s last public service
was to prevent a war between the Kings Adiyaman and
Thondiaman and the war was off. Her wanderings were a source
of great education and inspiration for her and she had social
consciousness in her poetry long before such things were
understood. She saw the simple people and their suffering at
close quarters and she did not see any reason why it must be so.
Her love for the common man and their simple affection and
respect, her disdain for the pretension of the rich and miserly, her
indignation at the injustice of the caste system, they are so simple
and direct that they have not lost a whit of their relevance even
today. Reformers in the twentieth century found that this ninth
century poet was their best intellectual weapon, stating matters
with the elegant efficiency of a shark bite.
