For a non-technical user of computer and internet, sometimes the terms like Linux, GNU, Gnome and name of any distro of Linux causes a lot of confusion. I intend to provide some simple information about major distros of Linux in this post.

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system based on Linux. This operating system just like MS-Windows can be used for laptops, desktops and servers. Almost all the applications that you might need while working on your computers are included in Ubuntu and there is no charge for using this operating system.

Debian is a free operating system that works well for laptops and desktops. Debian uses the Linux kernel and many basic OS tools are taken from GNU project and therefore uses the combined name of GNU/Linux. Like other distros of Linux, it is also free of charge.
