Present Indefinite Tense

Identification: When there is no certainty about the action being done. The time of the sentence is present.

 

Examples of Present Indefinite:
1. I go to school. (मैँ पाठशाला जाता हूँ। ਮੈਂ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।)

2. My mother does not allow me to go to the market. (मेरी माँ मुझे विक्री-स्थल नहीँ जाने देती है। ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਕ੍ਰੀ-ਸਥਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।)

3. Do you like to drink a cup of tea? (क्या आप एक चाय का प्याला पीना पसंद करते हैँ? ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੱਕ ਚਾਹ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ?)

 

Helping verbs used in Present Indefinite Tense: do, does

 

Affirmative: no usage of helping verbs:

1. I go to school. (मैँ पाठशाला जाता हूँ। ਮੈਂ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।)
2. The farmers grow in the fields. (किसान खेतोँ मेँ उगाते हैँ। ਕਿਸਾਨ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।)

Where you have to stress the point, do is used:

1. I do go to school. (मैँ पाठशाला अवश्य जाता हूँ। ਮੈਂ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਚਮੁੱਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।)
2. The farmers do grow in fields. (किसान अवश्य खेतोँ मेँ उगाते हैँ। ਕਿਸਾਨ ਸਚਮੁ੍ੱਚ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।)

Negative: use of do not, does not, don’t, doesn’t

1. I do not go to school. (मैँ पाठशाला नहीँ जाता हूँ। ਮੈਂ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।)
2. The farmers do not grow in fields. (किसान खेतोँ मेँ नहीँ उगाते हैँ। ਕਿਸਾਨ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।)

Interrogative: use of do and does

1. Do you go to school? (क्या आप पाठशाला जाते हैँ? ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋ?)
2. Do the farmers grow in fields? (क्या किसान खेतोँ मेँ उगाते हैँ? ਕੀ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ?)
