ஒரு வருடத்தினை கார்காலம், கூதிர்காலம், இளவேனில், முதுவேனில், முன்பனி, பின்பனி என ஆறு வகையாக பிரித்தனர். ஒரு நாளினை யாமம், வைகறை, விடியல், காலை, ஏற்பாடு, மாலை என ஆறு வகையாக பிரித்தனர். இது தமிழரின் கால அறிவினைக் காட்டுகிறது.
தொல்காப்பியர் இந்த உலகில் தோன்றியுள்ள உயிர்களை ஓரறிவு முதல் ஆறறிவு வரையுள்ள உயிர்களாகப் பிரித்துள்ளார்.
பழந்தமிழர் உணவில் பற்பல மருந்துப் பொருட்கள் இருந்துள்ளன. அவர்கள் உணவே மருந்து மருந்தே உணவு என்ற கோட்பாடுடன் வாழ்ந்தது தெளிவாகத் தெரிகிறது. சரியான உணவுப் பழக்கம் இந்த உடலுக்கு எவ்வளவு முக்கியம் என்பதை நாம் பின்வரும் திருக்குறளில் காணுகிறோம்.

Tholkappiyar, an ancient Tamil poet classifies the lives on this earth into six types based on their sensory perception capabilities. He divides the flora and fauna under six types from those with one sense to those with six senses.
The ancient Tamil people had a lot of medicinal ingredients in their cooking. They believed in the concept that food has to work like medicine and medicine has to be taken as food. The importance of right food habit is given in a Thirukkural which says, “The body does not need any medicine if you pay attention to what can be eaten and what must not be eaten.”
Kallanai was a dam constructed during Sanga Kalam, an ancient age of Tamil literature. This dam stands firm to this day in a fully functional fashion and deemed as the most ancient dam of the world.
