கடல் இந்த உலகின் 71% மேற்பரப்பினை மூடியுள்ளது. இதனால் மனிதர்களும் தரை வாழ் விலங்குகளும் வாழக்கூடிய இடம் மீதமுள்ள 29% மட்டுமே.பெருங்கடல் என்பது என்பது இந்த உலகினை சுற்றியுள்ள பெரிய நிர்ப்பரப்பினைக் குறிக்கிறது. பெரும்பாலான மேற்பரப்பினை கடல் முடியுள்ளதால் இந்த பூமியை நாம் நீல கிரகம் என்றும் அழைக்கிறோம். இந்தக் கட்டுரையில் கடலைப் பற்றி சில சுவையான தகவல்களை நாம் காண்போம்.

உலக வரைபடத்தில் நாம் உலகின் மேற்பரப்பில் அமைந்துள்ள பெருநீர்ப்பரப்பு ஐந்து பெருங்கடல்களாகப் பிரிக்கப்பட்டுளதைக் காண்கிறோம். இவை பசிபிக் பெருங்கடல், அட்லாண்டிக் பெருங்கடல், ஆர்க்டிக் பெருங்கடல், அண்டார்டிக் பெருங்கடல், மற்றும் இந்திய பெருங்கடல் ஆகியனவாகும். காற்றழுத்த தாழ்வுமண்டலங்களும் பருவக்காற்று மூலம் ஏற்படும் மலைகளும் கடலையே சார்ந்துள்ளன. தமிழில் கடலை முந்நீர் என்று கூறுகின்றனர். இதன் பொருள் கடல் மூன்று மூலங்களிலிருந்து தனது நீரைப் பெறுகிறது என்று பொருள். இந்த மூன்று மூலங்கள் ஆற்று நீர், மழை நீர் மற்றும் நிலத்தடி நீர் ஆகியனவாகும். பெரிய நீர்பரப்புகளைப் பெருங்கடல்கள் என்றும் அவற்றை விட சிறிய நீர்ப்பரப்புகளைக் கடல்கள் என்றும் அழைக்கிறோம். ஆயினும் இந்த உலக உருண்டையை சுற்றியுள்ள நீர்ப்பரப்பு முழுவதும் இணைந்த ஒரே பரப்பாகத்தான் இருக்கிறது.
கடல்கள் இயற்கையின் படைப்பில் மிகவும் சுவாரசியமானவை, அற்புதமானவை. கடல்களின் சராசரி ஆழம் 4 கிலோமீட்டர்கள். கடலின் மிக ஆழமான பகுதி 11 கிலோமீட்டர்கள். உலகின் மிக ஆழமான கடல் பகுதி பசிபிக் பெருங்கடலில் உள்ள மரியானா என்று கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தப் பகுதியில் கடலின் ஆழம் கடல் மட்டத்திலிருந்து எவரெஸ்ட் சிகரத்தின் உயரத்தை விட அதிகமாகும்.
கடல்கள் மிக அதிக எண்ணிக்கையிலான செடிகள் மற்றும் விலங்குகளுக்கு வாழிடமாகும். கடலின் மேற்பரப்பு ஒன்றாகக் காணப்பட்டாலும் உலகின் வெவ்வேறு பாகங்களில் உள்ள கடல் நீரின் வெப்பநிலை, உப்பின் அளவு, அடர்த்தி ஆகியன வேறுபடுகின்றன.

Ocean covers 71% of the earth. Thus, the land surface where land animals and humans can live is only 29% of the total space available on the plant. Ocean is a huge body of water surrounding the planet. Due to the vast stretch of water on its surface, the earth is also called as blue planet. Oceans play an important role in the life on this earth. Here we discuss some interesting facts about oceans.
The mapping process of the globe has identified five regions of ocean thus calling oceans by five different names. These are Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Antarctic Ocean and Indian Ocean. Depressions and seasonal rains are caused only buy oceans. In Tamil, oceans are also called as three waters, meaning the body of water that receives its contents from rains, underground water and river water. The large bodies of water are called as oceans and relatively smaller bodies of water are called as seas. However, on the whole, all the oceans and seas are found as a single mass of water around the earth.
Oceans are a wonder in nature’s creation. The average depth of oceans is 4 kilometers. The deepest point of the ocean is noted as 11 kilometers. This deepest point on the entire earth is identified as the Mariana valley in the Pacific Ocean. The depth of this point is much deeper than the elevation of the Mount Everest from the sea level.
Oceans are home to a large population of plants and water dwelling animals. The salinity, density and temperature differ between different oceans though the water of all oceans seem to be joint.
