Well, it won’t be an exaggeration to decree that Rajneeti presents a world gone mad in constant pursuit of inexorable lust for money and power. The movie is an attempt to showcase the inner workings of a political family which is divided into two on the basis of their different ideologies, both caught in the frenzy to possess the ‘Kursi’ as per the norm set by all our politicians from the very early times. The power-politics is on once the head of the family falls victim to a paralytic attack. Not to worry chaps, this one is naturally caused!
And Viola! The drama unloads itself against a background of blood-and-thunder-type plot. There are murders, conspiracies, blasts, brutal killings and the sub-plot of an unrequited love of Indu (Katrina Kaif), who is used like a pawn by her great business-minded father and others. It is a marriage of convenience where she has to compromise, left with nothing but grudges until the end when she realizes her long lost dream to come to the forefront of politics and change the face of the nation. (at least, that is what is promised whether fulfilled or not.)
The movie, through the character of Ranbir Kapoor, highlights the fact that how dirty politics can be! It surely brings out and elevates the most bestial side of man.
Rather than a story of power-play, the movie is more about the lust of acquiring power that can allow man to stoop to the most degenerating depths of character and inhumanity. Obviously, there are both the Good (the Pandavas) and the Bad (the Kauravas) sides but during the process of acquisition of power, it becomes difficult to differentiate and identify who is on the side of the common man. Perhaps, that is something the characters do not think of at all, except for planning what and where and what number of seats they aspire to win.
The epical background, the Mahabharata plot, does not help the movie much; perhaps Prakash Jha himself wanted it just for the sake of characterisation. No doubt, the director has done a commendable job, turning politics into something that could entertain all, and make all think was not an easy job. The performances of all the actors is power-packed and attention-grabbing with each character standing out with something distinctive, Katrina Kaif stands out for her Indian looks, Ranbir Kapoor for the maturity with which he plays the shrewd manipulator who strives hard to keep the politics business within his family, Arjun Ramphal stands out for representing the senselessness of an immature aspirer of the seat but a loving and generous brother, son and husband. Both the shades are stupendously portrayed by this Filmfare Awardee. Not to forget Ajay Devgun and Manoj Bajpayee, both of who portray the greed of power without conscience. It becomes worth mentioning that even these people have tenderness and humanity but there larger interest rests in something else!
