Present Continuous Tense

Identification: when the work is being done. The time of the sentence is present. Examples of Present Continuous Tense:

1. I am going to school. (मैँ पाठशाला जा रहा हूँ। ਮੈਂ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।)
2. My mother is giving me tea. (मेरी माँ मुझे चाय दे रही है। ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਦੇ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।)
3. My friends are coming to my home. (मेरे मित्र मेरे घर आ रहे हैँ। ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।)

Helping verbs used: is, am, are

Affirmative: use of am with I; use of is with singular noun; and use of are with plural and you.

  1. I am doing my work. (मैँ अपना काम कर रहा हूँ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਨਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।)
  2. She is getting ready for the school. (वह पाठशाला के लिए तैयार हो रही है। ਉਹ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।)
  3. You are drinking tea not milk. (आप चाय पी रहे हैँ दूध नहीँ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਚਾਹ ਪੀ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਦੁੱਧ ਨਹੀਂ।)

Negative: use of is not, am not, are not, isn’t, aren’t

  1. I am not doing my work. (मैँ अपना काम नहीँ कर रहा। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਨਾ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ।)
  2. She is not getting ready for the school. (वो पाठशाला के लिए तैयार नहीँ हो रही है। ਉਹ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ।)
  3. You are not drinking tea but milk. (आप दूध पी रहे हैँ चाय नहीँ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਚਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ।)

Interrogative: use of is, am, and are at the beginning of the sentence

  1. Are you going to school? (क्या आप पाठशाला जा रहे हैँ? ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?)
  2. Is he working in his office? (क्या वह कार्यालय मेँ काम कर रहा है? ਕੀ ਉਹ ਕਾਰਯਾਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ?)
  3. Am I speaking too much? (क्या मैँ अधिक बोल रहा हूँ? ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਵੱਧ ਬੋਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ?)
